Description

Kazakhstan is a wonderful place with strong influences from surrounding areas. Its nomadic people blend with Uyghur Mongolian and Chinese to the east, and Russian influence from the west during soviet rule.

During this time another unlikely cultural group emerged, the Koryo Saram, made of Korean migrants who were forcibly relocated from far eastern Russia. Many of them have relocated back to Korea but a strong community remains. The city is peppered with Korean restaurants and kimchi-inspired salads line market stalls.

Location: Green Bazaar, Almaty, Kazakhstan
